The MOVA Minis are finally here! MOVA Minis contain endless wonder, beautiful design, and uncompromising innovation in a miniature globe that you can hold in your hands. It is our most compact design ever, a magical way to elevate your interior decor and gift-giving to a new level. There is much more to these little globes than meets the eye, so we would like to delve into the reasons for their development, the production process, and what we hope to achieve with this brand new line.
A step forward for small
Let’s address the (small) elephant in the room: why have we gone small? We have experimented with larger MOVA designs before, and while size matters, we thought we could make a bigger statement with a smaller object. By placing our precise solar technology in miniature form, we could experiment, take risks, and perhaps refine and expand our design process, opening the door to brand new products in the future.
We also wanted to open our products to a new audience of home decor seekers and creative gift-givers, and thanks to the smaller size, we could make the MOVA Minis more competitively priced. Larger globes are beautiful but expensive to make and buy. We see smaller globes as more interesting and appealing to everyone, and it is important for us to make our product go from niche and unreachable to unique yet accessible.
Selecting the designs
Instead of just using our popular world map designs, we saw the small size as an opportunity to distinguish MOVA Minis with its own distinctive variety of designs. Last year, we held a design survey where the MOVA community could select famous artworks they wanted to see on MOVA Creations, with iconic choices like Van Gogh’s Starry Night (now available) and Hokusai’s The Great Wave off Kanagawa (hopefully coming soon). Using this input, we compiled our first design collection for the MOVA Minis. Art brings people from all worlds and times together – a fitting source of inspiration for the MOVA Mini designs.
These iconic artworks were originally painted on a two-dimensional surface, so manipulating them to work for a spherical 3D surface provided an opportunity to expand our design possibilities. We also created original designs, such as the Blue and Red Hearts MOVA Mini, to create more gift appeal, and we hope to continue experimenting with new designs on our mini canvas.
Reinventing the technology
Many would think that creating a larger size would be a bigger challenge, but we found that going smaller proved to be a more formidable trial. To create a more compact globe, we had to reinvent the inner workings (where the magic happens). We removed most of the inner liquid, experimented with new techniques to adapt the artwork, and used different types of solar cells and magnets. The entire process required intensive testing and fine-tuning.
The end result is more than just a MOVA Globe copy: a whole new product line with a lighter design and a higher rotation speed than other MOVA creations. The MOVA Mini is in its precision and magic in every way a MOVA creation, yet offers its own features that delight and amaze.
Small globes, big impact
We believe there is certainly truth in the saying that “the best things come in small packages.” With its lower price, new features, and a collection of iconic designs, MOVA Minis bring a cutting-edge accent to the home and offer a new creative way to gift a loved one. We like to think that the Minis are a small step for globes, but a giant leap forward for gifts.
